How to Sleep Well

Due to my frequent night duties, I am desperate to look for ways on how to sleep effectively even if it is against our body clock. I found some answers through this article. Just wanna share it to you guys.

Nothing is more frustrating than not being able to sleep. Tossing and turning. Your mind is racing, going over everything that happened today. Night noises keep you awake. What can you do? There ARE things you can do! Read on and learn some new tricks to sleep well. These tips are also known as "Sleep Hygiene."

  • Sleep only when sleepy
This reduces the time you are awake in bed.

  • If you can't fall asleep within 20 minutes, get up and do something boring until you feel sleepy
Sit quietly in the dark or read the warranty on your refrigerator. Don't expose yourself to bright light while you are up. The light gives cues to your brain that it is time to wake up.

  • Don't take naps
This will ensure you are tired at bedtime. If you just can't make it through the day without a nap, sleep less than one hour, before 3 pm.

  • Get up and go to bed the same time every day
Even on weekends! When your sleep cycle has a regular rhythm, you will feel better.

  • Refrain from exercise at least 4 hours before bedtime
Regular exercise is recommended to help you sleep well, but the timing of the workout is important. Exercising in the morning or early afternoon will not interfere with sleep.

  • Develop sleep rituals
It is important to give your body cues that it is time to slow down and sleep. Listen to relaxing music, read something soothing for 15 minutes, have a cup of caffeine free tea, do relaxation exercises.

  • Only use your bed for sleeping
Refrain from using your bed to watch TV, pay bills, do work or reading. So when you go to bed your body knows it is time to sleep. Sex is the only exception.

  • Stay away from caffeine, nicotine and alcohol at least 4-6 hours before bed
Caffeine and nicotine are stimulants that interfere with your ability to fall asleep. Coffee, tea, cola, cocoa, chocolate and some prescription and non-prescription drugs contain caffeine. Cigarettes and some drugs contain nicotine. Alcohol may seem to help you sleep in the beginning as it slows brain activity, but you will end end up having fragmented sleep.

  • Have a light snack before bed
If your stomach is too empty, that can interfere with sleep. However, if you eat a heavy meal before bedtime, that can interfere as well. Dairy products and turkey contain tryptophan, which acts as a natural sleep inducer. Tryptophan is probably why a warm glass of milk is sometimes recommended.

  • Take a hot bath 90 minutes before bedtime

A hot bath will raise your body temperature, but it is the drop in body temperature that may leave you feeling sleepy. Read about the study done on body temperature below.

Trouble Sleeping? Chill Out! - A press release from the journal Sleep about the significance in body temperature before sleep

  • Make sure your bed and bedroom are quiet and comfortable
A hot room can be uncomfortable. A cooler room along with enough blankets to stay warm is recommended. If light in the early morning bothers you, get a blackout shade or wear a slumber mask. If noise bothers you, wear earplugs or get a "white noise" machine.

  • Use sunlight to set your biological clock

As soon as you get up in the morning, go outside and turn your face to the sun for 15 minutes.

What is Dysmenorrhea?

In the simplest description of the word, it the pain the woman feels when they have their period! and mind you it is very painful!!!! But what really causes this one?

Dysmenorrhea is termed under the menstrual disorders related to the menstrual cycle. This primarily affects 50% of all women who have a menstrual period as statistics may say.

What causes it?
To understand dysmenorrhea, it's important to understand how the menstrual cycle works. Each month, the lining of the uterus, the endometrium, thickens to prepare for the egg that is released by the fallopian tubes. If the woman does not become pregnant during that cycle, then most of the endometrium is shed and bleeding occurs. The blood flows from the uterus, through the cervical canal, and out through the vagina. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs when the uterus contracts because the blood supply to the endometrium is reduced. This pain occurs only during a menstrual cycle where an egg is released. If the cervical canal is narrow, the pain may be worse as the endometrial tissue passes through the cervix. Pain can also be caused by a uterus that tilts backward instead of forward, low levels of physical activity, and emotional stress. Secondary dysmenorrhea can be caused by the growth of uterine tissue outside the uterus, called endometriosis; non-cancerous growths of muscle and fibrous tissue in the uterus, called fibroid tumors; the non-cancerous growth of the uterine lining in the muscular wall of the uterus, called adenomyosis; inflammation of the fallopian tubes; and the growth of scar tissue, or adhesions, between organs.

What are the symptoms?
Shortly before or in the beginning of the menstrual period, a woman with dysmenorrhea experiences cramps in the lower abdomen. The pain can be continuous, or may come and go, and may extend to the lower back and legs. The pain can be accompanied by headache, nausea, diarrhea or constipation, and the need to urinate frequently. In severe cases, dysmennorhea also causes vomiting and makes it difficult for the woman to participate in her normal activities. Symptoms are usually at their worst 24 hours after beginning, and stop after 2 days. Women with dysmenorrhea are more likely to pass blood clots from the lining of the uterus, which causes more pain.

Self-care tips
See your doctor if you have a pattern of severe pain at the beginning of and during your menstrual period. A thorough exam will help determine if your pain is caused by some underlying condition that may need immediate treatment. Remember, rest, diet, and exercise play an important role in your overall health, and may help relieve premenstrual and menstrual symptoms.

Something to make you Smile today!

If you yelled for 8 years, 7 months and 6 days you would have produced enough
sound energy to heat one cup of coffee.

(Hardly seems worth it.)

If you farted consistently for 6 years and 9 months,
enough gas is produced to create the energy of an atomic bomb.

(Now that's more like it!)

The human heart creates enough pressure when it
pumps out to the body to squirt blood 30 feet.

(O.M.G.!)

A pig's orgasm lasts 30 minutes.

(In my next life, I want to be a pig.)

A cockroach will live nine days without its head before it starves to death.

(Creepy.) (I'm still not over the pig.)

Banging your head against a wall uses 150 calories a n hour.

(Do not try this at home...... maybe at work.)

The male praying mantis cannot copulate while its head is attached to its body.
The female initiates sex by ripping the male's head off.

(poor mantis! one life, one sexual experience!)

The flea can jump 350 times its body length. It's like a human jumping
the length of a football field.

(30 minutes... lucky pig... can you imagine??)

The catfish has over 27,000 taste buds.

(What could be so tasty on the bottom of a pond?)

Some lions mate over 50 times a day.

(I still want to be a pig in my next life...quality over quantity)

Butterflies taste with their feet.

(Something I always wanted to know.)

The strongest muscle in the body is the tongue.

(Hmmmmmm........)

Right-handed people live, on average, nine years longer
than left-handed people.

(If you're ambidextrous, do you split the difference?)

Elephants are the only animals that cannot jump.

(OK, so that would be a good thing....)

A cat's urine glows under a black light.

(I wonder who was paid to figure that out?)

An ostrich's eye is bigger than its brain.

(I know some people like that.)

Starfish have no brains.

(I know some people like that too.)

Polar bears are left-handed.

(If they switch, they'll live a lot longer.)

Humans and dolphins are the only species that have sex for pleasure.

(Damn, what about that pig??)

Cancer Journal No. 2

CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar is a cancer-feeder. By cutting off sugar it cuts off one
important food supply to the cancer cells. Sugar substitutes like
NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is
harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or
molasses but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical
added to make it white in color. Better alternative is Bragg's aminos
or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-
intestinal tract
. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and
substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being
starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is
acidic and it is best to eat fish, and a little chicken rather than
beef or pork. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth
hormones
and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people
with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains,
seeds, nuts and a little fruits help put the body into an alkaline
environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh
vegetable juices
provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and
reach down to cellular levels within 15 minutes to nourish and
enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building
healthy cells try and drink fresh vegetable juice (most vegetables
including bean sprouts) and eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a
day. Enzymes are destroyed at temperatures of 104 degrees F (40
degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine. Green
tea is a better alternative and has cancer fighting properties. Water-
best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and
heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

12. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of
digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines
becomes putrefied and leads to more toxic buildup.

13. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining
from or eating less meat it frees more enzymes to attack the protein
walls of cancer cells and allows the body's killer cells to destroy
the cancer cells.

14. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence,
Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the
bodies own killer cells to destroy cancer cells. Other supplements
like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell
death
, the body's normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or
unneeded cells.

15. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive
and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor.
Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful
and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit.
Learn to relax and enjoy life.

16. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment.
Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to
the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to
destroy cancer cells.

Cancer Journal No. 1

Cancer Update from Johns Hopkins:

1. Every person has cancer cells in the body. These cancer cells do
not show up in the standard tests until they have multiplied to a few
billion. When doctors tell cancer patients that there are no more
cancer cells
in their bodies after treatment, it just means the tests
are unable to detect the cancer cells because they have not reached
the detectable size......" (

2. Cancer cells occur between 6 to more than 10 times in a person's
lifetime.

3 When the person's immune system is strong the cancer cells will be
destroyed and prevented from multiplying and forming tumors.

4. When a person has cancer it indicates the person has multiple
nutritional deficiencies. These could be due to genetic,
environmental, food and lifestyle factors.

5. To overcome the multiple nutritional deficiencies, changing diet
and including supplements will strengthen the immune system.

6. Chemotherapy involves poisoning the rapidly-growing cancer cells
and also destroys rapidly-growing healthy cells in the bone marrow,
gastrointestinal tract etc, and can cause organ damage, like liver,
kidneys, heart, lungs etc.

7. Radiation while destroying cancer cells also burns, scars and
damages healthy cells, tissues and organs.

8. Initial treatment with chemotherapy and radiation will often
reduce tumor size. However prolonged use of chemotherapy and
radiation do not result in more tumor destruction.

9. When the body has too much toxic burden from chemotherapy and
radiation the immune system is either compromised or destroyed, hence
the person can succumb to various kinds of infections and
complications.

10. Chemotherapy and radiation can cause cancer cells to mutate and
become resistant and difficult to destroy. Surgery can also cause
cancer cells to spread to other sites.

11. An effective way to battle cancer is to starve the cancer cells
by not feeding it with the foods it needs to multiply.

Missing Home

It's been 2 weeks since I moved out from our humble home and I'm missing it badly. I miss having my mom and dad around the house telling me what to do and what is not to do. I miss my brother, who sleeps most of the time (love you kuys)*wink* I miss my sisters, they are my baking buddies. I miss my bed and my computer most especially. Sad that I can't bring it with me since my siblings are still studying they need it more than I do. I miss waking up late and not worrying over something! I miss everybody and everything inside our home! *sob*
Many of my friends say that I'll get over it somehow and enjoy the new life I am in! Well, all I can say that it is not easy, and it will never be easy putting your past behind but I'm trying and will even try harder to give this new chapter of my life a chance to unfold.

My Cravings!

I must admit, I have a horrible appetite. I love almost all of the food here on earth except of course those that I am allergic with like the seafood stuffs! It will really kill me if I will have a moderate intake of those. So, lucky my friends who love seafood they can have all of my share!
Recently, especially after the wedding, I have been eating a lot, and I mean a lot! I feel like I'm already getting bigger than my usual built. In response to my observation, I'm planning to limit my sweet intake and carbo intake, but situations doesn't permit me. I am all the more incline to eat the food I'm trying to despise!
Now I'm craving for pasta! hungarian! blackforest! tropical fresh fruitsalad! *wink*

Will Somebody lecture me on food discipline!!!!

Extreme Fear Factor Challenge!

During our Christmas Party, the Extreme Fear Factor Challenge (PoPChoir version) was initiated. 2 teams comprising of 5 members each, competed for a cash price. The group decided that it would be a boys vs. girls game this time. So, the basses and tenor were grouped as one as well as the altos and sopranos. The challenges were indeed challenging. First challenge was the kalamansi eating contest wherein the challenger was required to eat 3 peeled kalamansi! The second challenge was the test of visual acuity and fine motor skill wherein they have to insert a strand of hair into 3 needleholes. Sounds easy but it is actually not, having all the time pressure and the cheers from the group leaves your hands shaking!. Third challenge was the Amplaya juice drinking contest! eeeww! For me this was the hardest challenge. Fourth challenge was the PoP choir puzzle challenge! The puzzle was quite tricky that the challengers from both teams were really having hard time solving it. Then the last challenge was to look for something that is embed in a plate full of flour, an easy but a messy challenge. Everybody was having fun and very game. The boys were declared the winners of the Fear Factor Challenge! Congratulations to the basses and tenors!

Belated Christmas Party!

Yesterday was The Assumption Parish Pop Choir's Christmas Party. We usually hold our party in January wherein everybody is now free from the hassles and bustles of the Christmas Season. We had fun and lots of fun with our traditional POP CHOIR inter voice caroling and never ending parlor games. We also had the exchanging of gifts with a twist! We were required to bring a P20 worth of gift with a price tag on to prove that is of the exact amount. I received 5 key chains and I gave out a tumbler. Simple yet memorable. We had a simple banquet to start up the party and end the party with dessert munching. We had cake courtesy of one of the birthday celebrants, macaroni salad from the altos, leche flan from the basses, watermelon punch from the sopranos and tropical fresh fruits from the tenors. We head home at around 11:30 in the evening.

Back To Work!

After a long vacation, I will be going on a night duty tonight! I am quite thrilled with the idea of going back because I feel like I'm missing a lot from the hospital lately. I'm anxious on the other hand, because it feels like the first time again! Hope no bloopers tonight! Wish me Luck!

Be Confident, Be Amazing

In general we, women needs to look good to feel good. We put special attention to our body details than the men do. We are very particular on the way we look, the way we dress and the way we move. I guess that is one genetic make up that sets women apart from men.
Another fact that we have to consider is that not all women are blessed with beautiful skin, body built and yes, a gifted bust size. But, hey women! Worry no more, with the technology innovation and latest health science discoveries, all of these worries are now given a solution. A sub specialization in surgery now paves the way to skin treatment and surgical enhancements. Curious as I am with these innovations and updates, I looked into one of the most popular site for women who cater all kinds of plastic surgery that involves women beautification and enhancement.
MYA or Make Yourself Amazing Cosmetic Surgery provides a wide range of enhancements that women can choose from. Mind you, the prices are flexible too! They have different packages that will suit your budget needs!
Heres more! Because "the need to Looking Amazing" is not only a women thing nowadays, MYA also offers cosmetic surgeries for men. Since undergoing a cosmetic surgery is a big step for men, MYA is offering a free consultation for those interested! Amazing isn't? See it for yourself!

I Hate Traffic !

Since I moved into our new home and it's quite far from where i work, I left the house early and I mean an hour early. Passing by Bangkal, a slight pile up of cars appeared infront of me, I said to myself, well at least we're moving. Then came the matina centerpoint, traffic light must have turned green 3 times already and still were not moving! Argghhh... I probably stayed in one spot for almost 10 minutes or so! Imagine that! traffic ate up my alotted travel time and I hate it. To make the long and tiring story short, i reached my destination with a travel time of 1 hour and 20 mins. Is there any solution to this? I just hope so!

First Flight

Yesterday, January 7 at around 4 in the morning, we headed to the Davao International Airport. It was the scheduled flight of my in-laws for Zamboanga. Some of them was their first time to board the plane. Noy and I were a little bit worried if they will be able to check-in to their respective flight smoothly. I checked out the Cebu Pacific office and lucky to see my cousin who works there is on duty. He accompanied me inside the airport and i was able to help my in-laws in there checking in. Once we were at the boarding area, i saw the excitement in the faces of my nieces. They were s thrilled to ride the plane. I can just recall the same experience during my first flight. Looking at their faces just made me smile and feel content. We actually made this kids' dream come true.

Paradise Getaway!

Last weekend Noy and I treated his family to an overnight stay at Paradise Island Beach Resort. We also invited some of the members of the pop choir to join us. The kids had a lot of fun under the sun while some of the members chose to jam along the shore line, with luigee playing the guitar.
We hit the waters at around 5 pm, when the sun was about to set. We played games and swam like we had never swim before. We had our dinner at around 7:30 pm and had a little chit chatting after.
When everybody hit their mattresses, Luigee and I, opted to build a sand castle. We built it in 4 hours. We we're all please with the result as this is both our childhood dream... to build a big sand castle. We were all the more proud when some of the beach goers asked to have their picture taken beside the castle! Rewarding isn't it?
At around 12 midnight, we rested our tired body. The next day, we left the beach early and head home.

Will be posting the pics soon! i forgot the USB cable at home eh *wink*

Moving Out!

I can't believe I'm actually moving out of the house. I'm getting sentimental because basically I spent my growing up years in this humble house of ours. Ronald told me that if i want, i can take it slow...meaning we can sleep here once in a while until I'm use to be away from home. The idea of leaving home never really sink in because i was too busy preparing for the wedding. Now, that we are finally married, reality bit me hard! I'm actually leaving home! I just hope and pray that things will be easier to handle and eventually I'll get use to it.
